May 8, 2024
On May 7th, 2024, I was hit with a double dose of difficult news. My friend’s father, whom I’d been closely following up on as he battled an illness, passed away unexpectedly. It was a heavy blow, especially since I had just checked in with her the day before. Later that day, I received even more difficult news: another friend was about to undergo surgery. Their spouse was understandably worried and requested prayers.
These events deeply affected me, leading me to decide on a 24-hour fast for mourning and prayer.
Living with Purpose and Embracing Slowness
The news also prompted a reflection on living life to the fullest. I admire my parents in their 60s who, having decided to slow down with work commitments, prioritize daily hikes with friends, spending time with grandchildren, and capturing memories. Every time I grieve, I’m grateful for their continued presence, knowing it won’t be forever. This realization perhaps adds meaning to life.
A Busy But Fulfilling Day
Despite the emotional undercurrent, the day was packed with activity. We traveled to Kluang, using the journey to listen to lectures from the “Think Like a Leader” series by Steve Murrell. We conducted a casual interview with a candidate from Penang and engaged in discussions with Dr. Victor about upcoming projects, including a town hall on “Reigniting the Purpose of Education” and future townhall planning. Transformation and innovation are core values at our company, driving our decision to empower the Stellar International School and Early Years Group teams to lead future townhall planning.
Later, I rushed to coach a client from Kota Kinabalu. Although slightly late, I thoroughly enjoyed the session – the time flew by! This client, starting a new business venture in 2022, is on a journey of transformation. Witnessing his hunger, strong character, good values, and humility fills me with joy to be part of his journey.
The Power of Reflection
One key takeaway from the coaching session was the importance of reflection. We often attend courses, motivational talks, etc., hoping for transformation but neglecting reflection. This client, like many, lacked the habit of reflection. We explored leadership mindsets, particularly steward leadership, shepherd leadership, and servant leadership, and how to adapt one’s leadership style depending on the situation. As a coach, I believe my experience can help young entrepreneurs avoid years of mistakes.
Finding Strength in Challenges
Despite a long and physically demanding day, including my usual 15-minute workout and 500-meter swim, I decided to forgo the temptation to eat. The hunger pangs served as a reminder of my friends’ struggles, prompting further prayer. The discomfort I felt paled in comparison to their experiences.
The coaching session that evening involved a woman seeking advice on settling into a relationship. I emphasized the importance of “starting with the end in mind.” What is her goal – to remain single, attached, married, or married with kids? Each option dictates a different lifestyle. Ultimately, life is short, and we must prioritize what truly matters – the people and pursuits that hold the most significance.
This experience served as a powerful reminder to live with purpose, embrace slowness when needed, and prioritize reflection for ongoing growth.
